How to Prepare for Body Contouring Surgery: A Complete Checklist

You’ve made the decision, you’ve had your consultation, and your surgery date is on the calendar. That mix of excitement and nerves is completely normal, and one of the best ways to manage it is to feel fully prepared. The weeks leading up to body contouring surgery matter more than most patients realize. What you do in the time before your procedure directly affects your safety during surgery, the smoothness of your recovery, and the quality of your results. This guide walks through everything you need to do to prepare, organized by timeline, so nothing gets missed.

8 Min Read:

Why Preoperative Preparation Matters

Body contouring procedures, whether that’s liposuction, a tummy tuck, a mommy makeover, or another procedure, are surgical events that require your body to be in the best possible condition to heal efficiently. Patients who prepare well tend to recover faster, experience fewer complications, and get better results.

Four to Six Weeks Before Surgery

Stop smoking

If you smoke, stopping at least four to six weeks before surgery is non-negotiable. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and significantly impairs the body’s ability to heal. In body contouring procedures, where healthy circulation is essential to tissue recovery, smoking dramatically increases the risk of complications, including skin necrosis (tissue death), delayed wound healing, and infection. Dr. Hadeed will ask about your smoking status and will not perform elective surgery on active smokers.

Reach a stable goal weight

Body contouring is a sculpting procedure, not a weight loss procedure. The best results come when your weight has been stable for at least three to six months. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can alter your results. If you are still working toward your goal weight, it is worth waiting until you have maintained it consistently before scheduling.

Have your medical clearances completed

Depending on your age and health history, Dr. Hadeed’s team may require preoperative labs, an EKG, or medical clearance from your primary care physician or specialist. These are safety requirements that ensure you are a good candidate for general anesthesia. Do not delay; these incomplete clearances can postpone your surgery date.

Review your medications and supplements

Many common medications and supplements increase bleeding risk and must be stopped before surgery. Blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are the most well-known, but the list also includes many herbal supplements, including fish oil, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, ginkgo biloba, and garlic supplements. Dr. Hadeed’s office will provide a complete list of what to stop and when.

Two Weeks Before Surgery

Optimize your nutrition

Your body needs protein, vitamins, and minerals to heal effectively after surgery. In the two weeks before your procedure, focus on eating a nutrient-dense diet rich in lean protein, vegetables, and whole foods. Avoid crash dieting. Adequate protein intake supports tissue repair, and vitamins C and zinc specifically support wound healing.

Limit alcohol

Alcohol thins the blood, compromises immune function, and interferes with anesthesia. It should be avoided in the two weeks before surgery and during recovery. Even moderate consumption can affect your results and recovery trajectory.

Begin setting up your recovery space

Recovery from body contouring is much smoother when your home is ready before you arrive from the hospital. Set up a comfortable recovery area with extra pillows for positioning, easy access to your medications, entertainment, a phone charger within reach, and loose, comfortable clothing that doesn’t require reaching overhead. If you are having an abdominal procedure, a recliner or wedge pillow for sleeping at an incline can significantly improve comfort in the first week.

One Week Before Surgery

Arrange your support

You will need a responsible adult to drive you home from surgery and stay with you for at least the first twenty-four hours. For more extensive procedures like a tummy tuck or mommy makeover, having someone available to help for the first week is important. If you have children, childcare arrangements need to be in place before your surgery date.

Fill your prescriptions

Your surgeon’s office will send prescriptions to your pharmacy before your surgery date. Fill them in advance so they are ready when you get home. Common postoperative prescriptions include a pain medication, an antibiotic to prevent infection, and sometimes an anti-nausea medication.

Prepare your postoperative diet supplies

Stock your kitchen with easy-to-prepare, nutritious foods. In the first days after surgery, appetite is often reduced, and cooking feels like too much effort. Protein shakes, soups, soft foods, and healthy snacks that require minimal preparation are practical choices. Staying well-hydrated is equally important.

The Day Before Surgery

Follow fasting instructions precisely

Dr. Hadeed’s team will give you specific instructions about when to stop eating and drinking before your surgery. Typically, patients are asked to fast from midnight the night before. This is a patient safety requirement related to anesthesia — do not cheat. Even a small amount of food or liquid can lead to your surgery being cancelled.

Shower with surgical soap

You will likely be asked to shower the night before and the morning of surgery with a chlorhexidine antibacterial wash, which reduces the bacterial load on your skin and lowers infection risk.

What to wear and bring

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off after surgery. Button-front or zip-front tops are ideal for upper-body procedures. Leave jewelry, contact lenses, and nail polish at home.

FAQs About Body Contouring Surgery Preparation

What happens if I don’t stop my medications in time?

Taking blood-thinning medications or supplements before surgery increases the risk of excessive bleeding during and after your procedure. If you forget to stop a medication, call Dr. Hadeed’s office immediately. Depending on the medication and timing, your surgery may need to be rescheduled for your safety.

Can I exercise right before my surgery date?

Moderate activity in the weeks leading up to surgery is generally beneficial. However, very intense exercise in the days immediately before surgery can increase inflammation and fatigue. Wind down your exercise intensity in the final few days before your procedure.

Is there anything I should do to prepare emotionally?

It is normal to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety before surgery. Many patients find it helpful to write down their goals and motivations, talk to others who have had similar procedures, and remind themselves of the reason they made this decision. If anxiety is significant, speak with Dr. Hadeed’s team. They are experienced at walking patients through concerns.

What if I get sick close to my surgery date?

If you develop a fever, infection, or significant illness in the days before surgery, contact Dr. Hadeed’s office immediately. Proceeding with surgery when you are acutely ill is unsafe, and your surgery date may need to be rescheduled.
