“Press on your outer thighs right now. If it feels uncomfortable or is tender in a way that is disproportionate to the amount of pressure you’re placing on your thighs, stay with me. This may be a hallmark sign of lipedema and most women have never been told what that means. Lipedema fat feels different from normal fat, not just to the surgeon, but also to the woman who is living with it.
Lipedema fat is characterized by three different things. Number one, tenderness out of proportion to the amount of pressure placed on the skin. Even the lightest touch can be quite sensitive or painful. Number two is easy bruising. A lot of times women with lipedema will notice bruises on their legs that they simply cannot explain. And number three, lipedema fat is resistant to diet and exercise. No matter how much of a calorie deficit you’re in, the distribution of fat and the affected extremities will not change.
These three things together, tenderness, easy bruising, and resistant to diet and exercise paint a clinical picture. It is a diagnosis. Press on your legs, check your bruising history, think about the lack of response to your diet and exercise efforts. If all three of these things exist, you may have lipedema.”
