Chronic Pain After Biopolymer Injections? Here’s What Could Be Happening | Dr. Hadeed

Chronic pain after biopolymer injections is one of the most dismissed symptoms I see in consultation, but it’s one of the most important ones to take seriously. And here’s the reason why. When you have biopolymers such as silicone or PMMA injected into your body, your body forms a very strong immune and inflammatory response because it recognizes these substances as a foreign substance. So your body tries to protect yourself by forming a wall of inflammatory tissue around the biopolymer. And these are referred to as granulomas.

And over time, these granulomas can grow and spread out and put pressure on the adjacent tissues as well as the surrounding nerves, and this can result in pain. Some patients describe it as a dull, achy pain. Other patients describe it as a sharp burning pain. But regardless of the characteristics of the pain, this tends to progress over time as the granulomas grow and as the biopolymer tends to spread out.

Unfortunately, there is no enzyme or substance that can be injected to dissolve biopolymers. The only option is surgical treatment to help alleviate the pain. So if you’ve had biopolymer injections and you’ve been dealing with chronic pain, this is your body’s signal that something is going wrong inside.
