Too much of a good thing can be more of a burden than a blessing. Some women look into plastic surgery to slim down the size of their breasts. Many women who experience physical and emotional discomfort from their disproportionately large breasts feel unsatisfied and frustrated with coping. Breast reduction surgery can remove excess breast tissue and fat to create a smaller breast size that is more in balance with your body, giving you the gorgeous and proportionate breast contour you have always wanted.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

Smaller, Perkier Breasts

Overly large breasts can feel like a burden for many women, and over time, breast tissue can stretch and make the chest appear droopy. Breast reduction plastic surgery can provide you with smaller, perkier breasts that will enhance your overall figure.

Relief From Chronic Pain

Chronic back, shoulder, and neck pain as a result of having excessive breast tissue can make it difficult for some women to go about their day-to-day activities. Breast reduction relieves chronic pain and can enhance your overall quality of life.

Improved Self-Esteem

Many women with naturally large breasts feel their breast size produces unwanted attention from strangers or is a distraction from who they are as a person. Breast reduction can not only improve the size and shape of your breasts, but it can also restore your self-esteem.

During your consultation, Dr. Hadeed will address any questions and concerns you may have and explain the details of your breast reduction surgery. He will also work with you to determine a surgical plan that best meets your individual needs.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery (also known as reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure that removes glandular tissue, fat, and excess stretched skin from your breasts. A breast reduction removes some of the weight of your breasts, helping to alleviate back, shoulder, and neck pain in the process. It can also improve the symmetry of your breasts and bring your breast size into a more harmonious balance with the rest of your figure. Finally, a breast lift also elevates your breasts to a more youthful position on your chest and shapes them into a more attractive contour.

If you are uncomfortable with the size of your breasts, suffer from chronic pain or skin conditions because of your large breasts, or simply wish to improve your self-esteem by reducing the size of your breasts, reduction mammaplasty can help.

What Are My Breast Reduction Options?

Several techniques can be used to perform breast reduction surgery. Dr. Hadeed will determine which method can help you achieve your goals based on your anatomy and specific measurements.

Liposuction for Breast Reduction

If the majority of volume in your breasts is due to fat and not glandular tissue, you may benefit from liposuction for breast reduction. Candidates for breast reduction using liposuction are patients who:

  • Want a small to moderate reduction in breast size
  • Have a minimal amount of sagging
  • Have good skin elasticity

Liposuction is minimally invasive, requires less downtime for healing, and results in smaller scars.

Vertical or “Lollipop” Breast Reduction

If you want moderate breast reduction but have more ptosis (sagging) of the breasts, a vertical breast reduction may be the answer. Also called a lollipop breast reduction, this technique involves two incisions: one around the outside of the areola and one extending vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease under your breast. This type of incision allows for the removal of excess fat and glandular tissue, the elimination of extra skin, and the reshaping and lifting of the breast to a more youthful position on your chest.

Inverted-T or “Anchor” Breast Reduction

An inverted-T incision is also known as an anchor incision because of its shape. It is used for women who need a significant amount of breast tissue removed, have a high degree of sagging, need more asymmetry correction, or a combination of these. An anchor breast reduction incision uses the same incisions as a lollipop reduction, with an additional incision that runs horizontally along the crease under your breast. An anchor-shaped incision allows for the maximum tissue removal, resculpting, and lifting of your breasts.

Can I Combine My Breast Reduction With Other Procedures?

If you want a breast reduction and lift at the same time, you’re in luck: a breast lift is already a part of the breast reduction procedure. A breast reduction can also be performed with several other procedures, including liposuction, a tummy tuck, or Dr. Hadeed’s signature TriDef™ Liposculpting procedure to sculpt your body for the hourglass figure you’ve always wanted.

If you wish to combine additional cosmetic procedures with your breast reduction, talk with Dr. Hadeed about your aesthetic goals during your initial consultation.

How Is a Breast Reduction Performed?

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Hadeed will address all your questions and concerns and explain the details of your breast reduction surgery. You will talk with Dr. Hadeed about your goals and desired results, learn about the technique he will use for your breast reduction procedure, and look at before and after photos to see examples of his expertise. Dr. Hadeed will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best meets your individual needs.

Preparation for Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and help you get settled. Ideally, someone should stay with you for the first 24–48 hours of your recovery to ensure everything goes smoothly.

You will need to stop taking any blood thinning medications or supplements before your surgery and refrain from nicotine usage for at least four weeks before your breast reduction. It is recommended that you prepare a recovery area at home with necessities such as pillows, pain medication, water, and other supplies to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

During your procedure, incisions are placed on the breasts, and excess skin and breast tissue are removed. The remaining breast tissue is tightened and reshaped to create an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The nipple and areolas will also be lifted and reduced, if needed, to ensure they are appropriately positioned and balanced on your breasts. In some instances, liposuction can be combined with breast reduction surgery to remove fat from the armpits.

“An outstanding professional! Dr. Hadeed exceeded my expectations!”

What Can I Expect During My Breast Reduction Recovery?

Following your surgery, you will be asked to wear a surgical bra to protect your new contours and minimize swelling. Swelling and bruising will occur but resolve a few weeks into your breast reduction recovery. You will need to take at least one to two weeks off work and will not be able to drive during that time. While resting is important, you should also take short walks daily, slowly increasing your time and distance. These walks help minimize the risk of developing blood clots and encourage better circulation and healing. Sleeping on your back and keeping your upper body elevated with pillows or in a recliner will help reduce swelling.

You will need to avoid strenuous physical activities for several weeks unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Hadeed. You will also need to wear a special compression bra initially and talk with Dr. Hadeed before you go back to wearing regular bras. You may experience some numbness on the skin of your breasts and your nipples, but this will typically go away on its own over time. Some women feel intermittent “zings” of pain in their breasts after a breast reduction, but this is also normal and is a result of nerve healing.

When Will I See My Breast Reduction Results?

You will notice some immediate results after your surgery, but it will take some time for your full results to be visible. It takes about three to four weeks for most of the swelling to subside, so be patient and follow Dr. Hadeed’s instructions for recovery. Your final results are typically visible about one month after your surgery (though some swelling may remain for up to three months), and you can look in the mirror feeling confident and satisfied with your new, proportionate breast size.

Breast Reduction FAQ

Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery should be in good health, realistic about their results, and non-smokers. They should also be at a stable, healthy weight and, ideally, be done having children.

Breast reduction surgery is meant for patients who wish to ease pain or discomfort caused by large breasts. Breast reduction can also improve your appearance—both in and out of clothes—and create a more proportionate silhouette. Women with large breasts who are considering a breast reduction may also deal with the following issues:

  • Chronic headaches, neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Persistent or chronic rash or skin irritation under the fold of their breasts
  • Permanent shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Nerve pain due to bra straps, underwires, or constricting clothing
  • Inability to take part in certain activities due to breast size
  • Feelings of self-consciousness or poor self-esteem because of their breast size
  • Trouble finding clothes that fit

What type of anesthesia will be used during my breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?

Breast reduction surgery typically takes about three to four hours. The duration of your surgery will depend on the size of your breasts, the extent of the correction needed, and whether you decide to combine other cosmetic procedures with your breast reduction. Dr. Hadeed is meticulous about removing the correct amount of excess breast tissue and fat, sculpting your newly smaller breasts to create a beautiful contour, and closing the incisions carefully to minimize scarring. In some cases, your breast reduction may also require removal and reattachment of your nipple and areola to ensure that they are centered in the correct spot on your breasts.

Are there any risks involved with breast reduction surgery?

There will be some who question if a breast reduction is dangerous. As with most surgeries, there are certain risks involved with breast reduction, which include:

  • Bleeding
  • Seratoma (fluid buildup)
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry
  • Changes in skin or nipple sensation
  • Poor wound healing
  • Breastfeeding difficulties

If you notice any unusual symptoms or have questions as you heal, contact Dr. Hadeed’s office as soon as possible.

Does breast reduction surgery affect sensation in the breasts?

After your breast reduction surgery, you may temporarily lose feeling in the skin on your breasts and nipples. In most cases, sensation returns over time, but not always. Loss of nipple sensation is more likely if your surgery includes the repositioning of your nipples and areola.

How long will my breast reduction results last?

Your breast reduction results are designed to be permanent. However, weight gain can affect your results, so it is essential to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Pregnancy and breastfeeding may also have an effect on your breast reduction results, which is why it is recommended that you are finished having children before your breast reduction surgery.

How much is a breast reduction in Beverly Hills, CA?

The cost of your breast reduction surgery near Beverly Hills, CA, will vary based on factors such as anesthesia fees, surgical fees, and the amount of correction needed. Dr. Hadeed will provide you with a breast reduction cost sheet to look over together during your consultation.

Does health insurance cover the cost of breast reduction surgery?

In some cases, health insurance may cover all or some of your breast reduction surgery. Insurance will not cover breast reduction done solely for cosmetic reasons, but may if it is deemed medically necessary because of chronic pain or skin issues. Call your insurance provider to determine if your insurance covers breast reduction surgery. They typically require preauthorization and may also ask for documentation of the health conditions exacerbated by the size of your breasts.

Is breast reduction surgery painful?

You will feel some discomfort after your breast reduction surgery, but it can be alleviated with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication. It is important to follow Dr. Hadeed’s instructions for recovery, as overdoing your activity or returning to your daily tasks too quickly can increase your discomfort and prolong the healing process.

Does breast reduction surgery leave scars?

Scarring will depend on the technique used during your breast reduction surgery. Dr. Hadeed is very careful about closing your incisions to minimize the appearance of scars. Any breast reduction scars can be hidden underneath your clothing and will likely fade over time.
