Breast Augmentation Procedure

Over time, many women begin to notice their breasts changing due to pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding, and the natural aging process. Others may feel their breasts are asymmetrical, underdeveloped, or too small and desire a bigger, perkier, and more balanced chest. Luckily, Dr. Hadeed uses a variety of breast implant types and options to help you reach your goal of attaining the most natural-looking breast augmentation results possible. Why Do Women Consider Breast Augmentation?

An Unbalanced Figure

You may feel that your breasts look uneven or do not complement your figure. Breast augmentation can correct breast asymmetry and achieve breasts that fit with the rest of your body to create a more balanced appearance.

Loss Of Volume

As your breasts fluctuate with time and lifestyle changes, they can become smaller, flatter, and deflated. Breast augmentation can restore volume to your breasts for a more voluptuous appearance.

Dissatisfying Breast Appearance

If you are feeling unsatisfied with the appearance of your breasts and wish to make a change, our team can help you address all of your needs. No concern is too big or too small for us.

How Breast Augmentation Is Performed

In many cases, when women decide to undergo breast enhancement or enlargement surgery, they are drawn to the largest implant or most affordable augmentation options. These implants more commonly lead to breast implant removal procedures from women who no longer want a drastically larger bust or who desire a more natural look.

For this reason, it is recommended that women opt for a breast implant that balances their figure and provides a natural appearance rather than an artificial one. This also goes for the affordability of implants as well; while saline implants may be cheaper, they are more prone to rippling than their slightly more expensive silicone implant counterpart.

During your consultation in Beverly Hills, Dr. Hadeed will help you choose the breast implants size and options that will give you the best results for your body.

Breast Implant Types

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants are filled with a saline solution and placed either above or below the pectoral muscles depending on the lifestyle and preferences of the patient. It is always recommended that patients choose a breast implant size that will complement their figure and create a harmonious appearance.

If you are looking for an affordable option, saline breast implants are less expensive than silicone, but they do not provide the same caliber of natural shaping or texture that you can find in silicone.

Saline implants are effective at creating a robust, youthful breast appearance, but while the surrounding skin and tissue conform to the underlying implant, saline implants are ultimately the consistency of water, which is often noticeable to the touch.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are made entirely from a silicone substance, making them less prone to rupture or rippling and helping improve the natural look and feel of your bust after implants. Their silicone structure allows them to be shaped to your specific needs.

If you are looking for a natural appearance with as little chance of implant rippling or texture concerns after the procedure, silicone implants are the best option to create a more pronounced, natural figure. Silicone is also better at mimicking the texture of a natural breast, making it less obtrusive than the saline alternative.

Incision Types

Despite what type or shape implant you get, an incision will have to be made somewhere on the skin so that Dr. Hadeed can place the implant inside your breast tissue. Scarring is possibly the largest drawback to any cosmetic surgery, but you can minimize its impact by choosing the least visible location for your lifestyle.

There are two incision types you can choose from for any implant type: inframammary and periareolar. With saline implants, you have two additional options for incisions that are not available for silicone implants: transaxillary (made within the armpit) and transumbilical (through the belly button). These two options prevent scarring on the breast tissue.

Inframammary

This incision is made along the fold beneath the breasts, which means the scarring will always be covered by clothing as minimal as a bikini or bra. If you find yourself wearing clothing that often exposes the underside of your breast, this might not be the best option for your implant incision.

The upside to this incision location is that it provides the maximum amount of visibility for the doctor to operate, which means the likelihood of misplaced implants or an unnatural appearance drops significantly compared to other methods. This incision can accommodate both silicone and saline implant types.

Periareolar

In this method, incisions are made around the perimeter of the areolas, which allows for scarring to blend in with the change of texture between the skin and areola. Any clothing, including more revealing bras, lingerie, or bathing suits, will cover the incision location, so you won’t need to worry about exposing your scarring at the beach or in clothing with less coverage.

This method provides moderate control over implant placement, but it does come with the risk of changing the sensitivity of the nipple. This incision can accommodate both silicone and saline implant types.

Transaxillary

This incision is only made with saline implants. The cut is made within the armpits, preventing any type of scarring from happening on or near the breast area. If you want to protect the aesthetic of the skin surrounding your breast, this is a reliable option to do so.

Unfortunately, since this incision is only done for saline implants, this method may be more susceptible to rupture or skin texture problems once the implant has been set.

Transumbilical (TUBA)

Similar to the transaxillary method, this incision is also a good way to ensure that the breast and surrounding tissue is not scarred since this cut is made through the belly button. This method is also only conducted for saline implants and utilizes an endoscopic camera to help with their placement.

Saline implants do not have the same structural integrity as silicone implants and are more prone to rippling or rupture once implanted.

Implant Placement

There are several implant placement options available, and this choice will affect the overall appearance of your breasts. Dr. Hadeed usually performs dual plane breast augmentation, where the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle, and the breast tissue is slightly repositioned to cover the lower part of the implant. This technique provides a more natural breast shape and texture.

In a submuscular breast augmentation, the implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscles. By having an additional layer of natural tissue in front of the implant rather than just a single layer of skin or tissue, there is a lower chance of rippling and capsular contracture. If you are concerned about having a natural chest appearance, submuscular placement is your best option for addressing that worry.

If you have a more active and fit body shape, particularly if you routinely use or flex your chest muscles, you may want to consider subglandular placement, which places the implant above the pectoral muscles, reducing the likelihood of implant distortion, rippling, or rupture during muscle contraction.

Combinations

If you would like to take your aesthetic goals a little further, you can combine your breast augmentation with another procedure to create even more drastic results. Breast augmentation with breast lift surgery can not only increase the size of your bust to make your body more balanced, but it can also address any looseness or sagginess in the breast area caused by weight fluctuation, genetics, or aging, giving you a youthful, balanced body shape.

Combining your breast augmentation with other parts of a Mommy Makeover (liposuction, butt lift, tummy tuck, etc.) can help you restore the contours and curvature that was lost during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Liposuction reduces the size of stubborn pockets of fat, while a butt lift or breast augmentation increases the fullness of the targeted areas.

After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Recovery

It is likely that you will feel disoriented and sore immediately following the procedure, but it should only take a few hours for these anesthesia effects to wear off. You should plan ahead to make sure you have a ride home from the hospital and have someone who can stay with you overnight.

Dr. Hadeed will prescribe you medication to cope with the pain and discomfort from the surgery, which is enough to help most patients cope with the worst part of the pain. A compression bra should also be worn to help minimize swelling. Within a week, most patients are able to return to desk jobs.

After the first week has passed, Dr. Hadeed recommends that you ease yourself back into light activity and your regular daily routine, but strenuous activities should still be avoided at this point since they can cause serious harm to the healing process. It generally takes about six weeks to be fully cleared by Dr. Hadeed to resume all normal activities following breast augmentation surgery.

Here are some breast augmentation recovery tips:

Wear your compression bra:

This garment is designed to reduce swelling and pain following your breast augmentation procedure. It provides support to your breasts and keeps your incisions from unnecessary pressure.

Don’t forget about your medications:

It is important to get plenty of rest and relaxation after undergoing your procedure, but it is equally as important to make sure you are taking your medication as prescribed by Dr. Hadeed.

Make sure to have help:

You will need to avoid any heavy lifting (10 or more pounds) for the first two weeks after your procedure and anything over 20 pounds for the following four weeks, so it is important to make sure you have someone around who can help with household tasks or children while you recover. Since you are not allowed to drive while taking narcotic pain medication, it would also be helpful to have arrangements for someone to drive you to and from appointments and errands.

Results

Breast augmentation results can be seen immediately after surgery. However, it may take several months for the swelling to subside completely and for the implants to settle. Most women feel more self-confident after complete recovery from the procedure.

Scars

The severity of your scarring will depend on the incisions made and your body’s reaction to the incisions. Avoid direct sunlight when the scars are still new, as this will minimize any discoloration. In most cases, scarring from breast augmentation surgery is easily hidden by clothing. As time passes, the severity of the scarring will fade.

Breast Maintenance

You can start getting back to your regular routines after one week has passed from the breast augmentation surgery, as long as those routines do not include heavy lifting or exercise. You may shower two days after the breast augmentation procedure, but you should avoid submerging yourself in water (baths, hot tubs, and swimming pools) for at least six weeks to avoid exposing yourself to infection and harming the healing process.

If you are used to sleeping on your stomach, you may have some difficulty getting comfortable after your procedure. You must sleep on your side or back to avoid putting excess pressure on your wounds. Keeping your head and chest elevated with pillows or by sleeping in a comfortable reclining chair will help expedite your healing process.

Complications

There is a risk of complications manifesting in any surgical procedure. Here is a list of the most common complications that follow breast augmentation:

Rupture: In rare cases, the implant used to create your new shape may leak. In the case of a saline implant, the fluid that fills the implant will be absorbed by the body, but the casing must be retrieved surgically. Since silicone is a single unit made of dense material, a rupture in this type of implant typically stays localized between the implant and the surrounding scar tissue.

Capsular Contracture: In certain instances, the scar tissue that naturally forms around the implants can tighten, resulting in discomfort or a distortion in the shape of the breast.

Double Bubble Breast Deformity: This complication arises when the implant does not sit properly in the breast tissue and either rises too high or too low relative to the native breast tissue, causing the appearance of two “bubbles” on the breast.

Breast Implant Bottoming Out: When the breast implant slips beneath the inframammary fold, it is referred to as bottoming out. It can be caused by large implants or weak breast tissue that was unable to hold the weight of the implant

In our practice, time is
the secret ingredient.

Breast Revision

If you are unhappy with the initial results of your breast augmentation or have experienced a decline in the appearance of your breasts as you have aged, you can always look to have breast revision surgery to correct the problems you are experiencing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Augmentation

  • Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Ideal candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations. Women with volume loss, underdeveloped or asymmetrical breasts, or naturally small breasts can opt for this procedure. Patients will be asked to stop smoking and drinking for a few weeks before and after their surgery.

  • How long does breast augmentation usually take?

The length of breast augmentation surgery can vary depending on the amount of correction needed. Typically, the procedure will take around an hour to complete.

  • Are there any risks or side effects involved with breast augmentation?

As with most surgical procedures, there are certain risks involved with breast augmentation. These include:

    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Changes in nipple sensation
    • Fluid buildup
    • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
    • Capsular contracture (tightening of scar tissue)
    • Implant leakage or rupture
  • How soon can I wear a regular bra?

Dr. Hadeed typically recommends waiting six weeks before you start wearing a regular wire bra. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Hadeed can tell you if you are in the clear.

  • Will breast augmentation increase my risk of breast cancer?

No, there is no link between breast cancer or breast implants and the breast augmentation procedure.

  • Am I too old for breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation is a suitable treatment for anyone who is looking to restore the shape, size, and fullness of their breasts, regardless of age.

  • When can I return to work after a breast augmentation?

Most women are able to return to their desk jobs after one week of recovery, but if you work a job that is labor-intensive or requires you to lift more than 20 pounds, you should plan on being out of work for as long as six weeks.

  • Will breast augmentation affect my weight?

Aside from the added weight from the implants, there is no direct effect on the patient’s weight.

  • Can I breastfeed after having a breast augmentation?

Yes, most breast implants do not have any effect on a patient’s ability to breastfeed. If you received a periareolar incision around the nipple, your milk ducts may have been affected. If your implants were placed over the pectoral muscle (subglandular), then you may also experience some difficulty with breastfeeding. Dr. Hadeed can review all of the effects on breastfeeding with you during your consultation at his office in Beverly Hills.

  • What can I do if I don’t like the results?

Regardless of the reason, if you are unhappy with your results, you can always undergo breast revision surgery, which will correct the issues you were having with the original breast augmentation surgery. It is important to vocalize your aesthetic goals and concerns to Dr. Hadeed prior to the surgery at Josef Hadeed Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills so that you can have the best possible results.

  • How much does a breast augmentation cost?

Dr. Hadeed will provide you with an accurate estimate of your procedure price, but it is important to remember that the cost of your surgery depends on all of the following: anesthesia fees, hospital and surgical facility costs, medical tests, post-surgery garments, prescriptions, and the surgeon’s fee.
